Yacht charting is a joyous experience, but if things go wrong unexpectedly, your joy may turn into a painful situation. So what to do? Yes, we are talking about medical emergencies that may occur during your yacht journey. Therefore, it is important to be prepared well in advance for situations that are beyond your control, including medical emergencies that require immediate attention, quickly and efficiently.

Here, we will share our thoughts based on our years of experience and knowledge in the middle of the sea. We will discuss some common first-aid issues that may arise while you are on your yacht enjoying your time with your loved ones. We will discuss how to tackle any unwanted problems.

It is said that “precaution is better than cure.” Therefore, you are always advised to do a first-aid training course before you are yacht charting anywhere in the world.

Do a first aid sea training course

As mentioned above, a first aid sea training course is an absolute must for everyone who is planning to sail. There can be nothing better than being prepared to tackle any unexpected situation by learning tricks from professionals on how to handle them in any given situation. Emergencies never come by informing us they are coming. So, you should learn how to deal with difficult situations with a calm mind and positive words from an accredited first aid sea trainer.

Avoid situations that invite accidents

To protect yourself from any risk in any kind of situation, you must train yourself in advance and have all the required tools and supplies to handle even the worst of situations. Most of the injuries in the middle of the sea happen due to negligence or a lack of preparation and knowledge. These include:

Chances of cuts and bruises

You must be aware of all the potential sharp objects and surfaces to avoid them while you move around. If you grab them or stumble upon them accidentally, it may lead to cuts and serious injuries. So, before you set out for a yacht charter, take a walk around the vessel with the captain.

Chances of slips and falls

Wear appropriate footwear when you are yachting, as you may encounter slippery or rough surfaces that may cause slips and falls. If you are a first-timer, you may request the captain to guide you accordingly.

Chances of Drowning

While on board, life jackets are a must, so that any chances of falling or drowning can be reduced by prompt action.

What to do when accidents do happen

Though it is not a frequent thing to happen, you must be prepared for any kind of emergency.

Stay Calm

You will not gain anything by panicking, so staying calm in difficult situations will help you sort things out better. A first aid sea training course can teach you how to stay calm and how it can help control an adverse situation.

Fishing Injuries

Injuries while handling slippery fish can occur unexpectedly and become serious. So, prompt handling is a must to avoid dangers. You may get injuries either while handling the fish or while handling the fishing equipment. Seek medical attention immediately and never do self-medication.

Overboard emergencies

If you find someone drowning, immediately throw them a flotation device and seek help from a trained person to get him or her back to the vessel. Perform CPR if you find the person is not breathing and/or his or her pulse is missing.

Other medical emergencies

Here some a few more medical emergencies you might encounter, like heart attacks, strokes, broken bones, snake bites, etc. You must be aware of the symptoms of each of them and learn to provide medical assistance to victims in such cases.

Keep a First Aid Kit Handy

Consider including:

  • Antiseptic solution
  • Adhesive bandages and tape
  • Cold packs and short splints
  • Disposable applicators
  • First aid cream
  • Gauze pads
  • Sterile dressing compresses
