Yacht management company Hill Robinson has become the first in the yachting sector to offset its 2021 carbon footprint by participating in new ‘blue’ carbon project Mikoko Pamoja. The initiative will see an estimated 1,250 tonnes of CO2e offset with an extensive mangrove conservation and restoration project in Kenya.
Mikoko Pamoja is one of the world’s first ‘blue’ carbon credit projects, whose mission it is to protect over 100 hectares of mangrove forest and ensure the re-forestation of a beach and shoreline.
In addition to the environmental benefits of carbon capture and storage, Mikoko Pamoja is a community-led project bringing extensive benefits to the local population.
Validated in 2014, Mikoko Pamoja is a 20-year project carried out under the Plan Vivo Carbon Standard methodology. It achieved its first five-year verification in 2019.
Mangrove trees are a popular choice for reforestation projects due to their high carbon sequestration, desalination and essential habitat capacities.
Projects such as Mikoko Pamoja also provide long-term, community-orientated solutions to the devastating effects of deforestation worldwide.
Hill Robinson’s participation in the project demonstrates its company-wide commitment to offsetting its carbon footprint and leading by example.
